Laser Treatment for Glaucoma

High-tech laser therapy for stabilising glaucoma

Glaucoma is often called the “silent thief of sight” because it can cause irreversible vision loss without early warning signs. Early detection of glaucoma is a key step toward effective treatment and preserving your vision.

VISION offers the full spectrum of modern laser therapies for glaucoma, tailored to the individual condition of each patient — from the gentle SLT procedure, the gold standard for early-stage glaucoma, to treatment with the Supra 810 laser for advanced disease, without the need for surgical intervention.

The Procedure

VISION offers the most advanced SLT laser therapy (Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty), recognised worldwide as the gold standard in non-surgical glaucoma treatment. For more advanced or resistant forms of glaucoma, we apply a specialised diode laser.

In early-stage glaucoma, the SLT laser gently and painlessly improves the outflow of intraocular fluid, thereby reducing pressure by stimulating the natural cells within the eye’s drainage system (the trabecular meshwork). Globally, this method is considered a first-line treatment for glaucoma. It allows for a reduction or even discontinuation of anti-glaucoma eye drops, helping to avoid the side effects associated with long-term use — such as dryness, irritation, allergies, and the accumulation of preservatives in the eye. The procedure takes only a few minutes and, if needed, can be repeated multiple times.

In cases of more advanced glaucoma, VISION is equipped with another type of laser — the Supra 810, which works at a deeper level, targeting the area that produces intraocular fluid (the ciliary body), thereby reducing its production.

Results

  • Normalises and lowers eye pressure, which slows further damage to the optic nerve
  • Prevents additional loss of vision

Recommended for:

  • Elevated intraocular pressure or open-angle glaucoma
  • Early or moderate stage of the disease (where SLT is an effective and gentle method)
  • Advanced glaucoma, when drops and other therapies no longer provide good control (Supra 810)
  • Patients who want a more convenient and long-lasting alternative to eye drops
  • Patients who experience intolerance or side effects from medications

Not recommended for:

  • Closed-angle glaucoma, where the drainage angle is blocked and the laser cannot reach the necessary area
  • Severely damaged optic nerve, where irreversible vision loss has already occurred
  • Active inflammatory processes in the eye (uveitis, conjunctivitis, etc.)
  • Infections or wounds in the eye area
  • Patients with very advanced cataract or other conditions that limit laser access
  • Pregnancy (the procedure is usually postponed until after childbirth)

Side Effects

  • Mild redness or irritation in the eye during the first few hours
  • Temporary blurred vision or light sensitivity
  • Increased tearing or a feeling of dryness

Risks

  • Need for a repeat procedure, if the effect is incomplete
  • In extremely rare cases – a change in visual acuity

Frequently Asked Questions

No — treatment with both lasers does not cause pain. Anaesthetic eye drops are applied for both procedures.

With the SLT laser, you may feel slight discomfort but no real pain. After the procedure, mild redness or irritation is possible, which usually resolves within a few hours.

During treatment with the Supra 810 laser, you may feel slight warmth or pressure, but no pain. After the procedure, mild redness or sensitivity may occur, which typically resolves within 1–2 days.

After the laser procedure, your doctor will schedule a follow-up appointment to monitor your intraocular pressure and recovery.

Contact us immediately if you:

  • experience severe pain or sudden worsening of vision

  • notice significant redness, swelling, or discharge

  • develop increased sensitivity to light or a throbbing pain in the eye

  • have sudden blurred vision or partial vision loss

Such reactions are rare, but they require prompt medical evaluation to prevent complications.
