Innovations in Ophthalmology in VISION

Medicine, and in particular ophthalmology, has seen remarkable advancement in recent decades.

Today, patients have the privilege of benefiting from innovations in the diagnosis and treatment of many eye diseases that were once considered irreversible or untreatable. VISION Eye Hospital, recognized as the best eye hospital in the Balkans at the Balkan Medical Awards 2022, is equipped with a wealth of cutting-edge diagnostic and therapeutic equipment for eye diseases.

For the clinic’s specialists, this represents a powerful tool that enables them to provide world-class diagnostic and therapeutic capabilities to each patient. One of the most useful devices for emergency diagnostics is the modern Eidon – a wide-field camera that captures images of the fundus (the back of the eye). It offers several advantages over standard retinal cameras: there is no need for pupil dilation with drops, and it can image the retina and optic nerve even in the presence of obstructions like cataracts or vitreous opacities. The captured images have excellent resolution, improved color, contrast, and brightness, allowing for superior imaging, diagnosis, and monitoring of eye diseases.

The resulting digital color photo documentation covers from 90° to 160° of the retina, including both the central and peripheral areas. This enables diagnosis and follow-up of peripheral retinal diseases and allows early detection of a variety of retinal pathologies. Particularly valuable is the device’s “mosaic” function, which stitches multiple images together (like a puzzle) to produce a wide view of the retina—up to 200°. A special filter used during imaging also provides crucial information about the nature, extent, and progression of certain retinal diseases.

Eidon is easy to operate, non-invasive (no intravenous contrast agents are used), safe for the patient, and takes only about 10 minutes to perform—yet provides detailed and precise information to assist in the treatment and monitoring of diseases.

Every patient at VISION clinic can also benefit from the Eyestar, the most modern eye laser scanner for cataract evaluation. VISION is the first and only clinic in Bulgaria currently using this fully automated and painless device. It delivers the necessary preoperative data to ensure excellent outcomes in cataract and refractive surgery by performing precise measurements of the eye’s structures—from the front (cornea) to the back (fundus). The advanced next-generation formulas built into the device for calculating intraocular lenses (IOLs) provide the eye surgeon with the unique ability to select the best and most suitable lens for each patient. This ensures outstanding visual results and peace of mind, with no postoperative refractive surprises following routine cataract surgery. The examination is fully automated, contactless, and brief.

VISION Clinic offers treatment using innovative equipment for eye conditions where traditional ophthalmology has not achieved satisfactory results. One such innovation is the red laser Supra used for glaucoma. This surgical procedure can be applied to all glaucoma patients, whether open-angle or closed-angle. By using sub-threshold power pulses during surgery, excellent postoperative results are achieved—comparable to those of filtering glaucoma surgery—without exposing the patient to the risks of open procedures. The laser provides stable and effective intraocular pressure control, halting disease progression and ensuring a good quality of life for patients.

For retinal diseases, a leading role is played by the yellow laser EasyRet, used for diabetic retinopathy, macular diseases, and retinal conditions. It has the unique ability to treat the center of the fundus (macula), enabling therapy for macular edema, central serous chorioretinopathy, and dry macular degeneration, all without destroying the treated tissue. It can also be used to treat all pathological changes in the retina for which older green lasers were indicated. Major advantages of this innovative laser include being painless, faster, and avoiding the creation of blind spots in treated areas—allowing patients to maintain a high quality of vision and life. For this reason, it has quickly become a global leader in this area of ophthalmology.

Among the arsenal of innovative equipment, VISION Eye Hospital also features a device for laser vitreolysis, used to treat floaters in the vitreous. This device effectively removes these annoying visual disturbances, restoring clear vision to patients.

At VISION, we rely on the Schwind Amaris, the fastest excimer laser in the world, for diopter correction. It is also one of the safest lasers for this procedure. This laser removes one diopter in just 1.3 seconds. It features an eye-tracking system that monitors even micromovements of the eye and adjusts the laser beam in real time. Schwind Amaris is the only laser that tracks eye movements in 7 dimensions, ensuring maximum precision and safety.

This laser also enables the TransPRK procedure, which, unlike conventional methods, does not use surgical instruments. The entire diopter correction is performed solely with laser energy. Vision correction at VISION Eye Clinic is performed by highly experienced specialists in a safe, welcoming, and comfortable environment for both patients and their companions.

The clinic’s nearly 20 years of experience, marked by mastery of the latest techniques and technologies in ophthalmology, the availability of high-tech innovative devices, and an efficient organizational system, are the foundations that ensure excellent treatment outcomes and improved quality of life for our patients.
