Farsightedness

Farsightedness is characterized by a reduced ability to see nearby objects clearly

Farsightedness (hypermetropia) is a condition in which distant objects appear clearer than nearby ones because light focuses behind the retina instead of directly on it.

Farsightedness can cause eye strain, headaches, and blurred vision when reading or doing close-up work.

Symptoms

  • Blurred vision at close range
  • Difficulty focusing when reading or writing
  • Headaches after reading, writing, or working on a computer
  • Strain, pressure, heaviness, pain in the eyes and forehead

Risk Factors

  • Family History
  • Certain eye conditions, such as cataracts, can lead to farsightedness
  • Age – in older adults, hypermetropia can appear or worsen due to the natural ageing of the eyes. As we age, the lens of the eye loses its elasticity, which reduces the ability to focus on close objects. This condition is called presbyopia
  • Excessive screen use at close distances strains the eyes and can cause focusing difficulties

Diagnosis

  • Basic eye examination
  • Examination with pupil dilation (with drops) – if necessary
  • Measurement with a refractometer

Treatment

Farsightedness is most often corrected with glasses or contact lenses, but for a long-term solution, a refractive laser procedure is recommended. The results are achieved quickly and painlessly. The procedure is performed under local, drop anaesthesia, and the patient remains awake throughout the entire process.

VISION is a pioneer in introducing laser vision correction in Bulgaria. With more than 20 years of experience combined with the latest, state-of-the-art technology, the clinic provides exceptional quality and outstanding results.

Prevention

Farsightedness (hypermetropia) is usually a congenital or hereditary condition that cannot be completely prevented, but there are ways to slow its progression and reduce visual discomfort:

  • Regular eye examinations
  • Proper correction with glasses or contact lenses
  • Good lighting when reading or working
  • Taking breaks during near work (the “20-20-20” rule)
  • A healthy lifestyle
  • Avoiding excessive screen time

Frequently Asked Questions

As the eye grows and develops, farsightedness tends to decrease. During adolescence, farsightedness may disappear or turn into nearsightedness. If it does not completely disappear by the time they turn 15, farsightedness will likely continue for life.
