Symptoms
Symptoms may often not be visible, especially in children, as they may not realize they don’t see well with one eye.
- Blurred Vision: Patients with lazy eye may not realize they see blurrily or fuzzily with one eye, as the brain compensates with the stronger eye.
- Difficulty Reading or Focusing: Often, one eye is noticed to squint when focusing.
- Problems with Distance and Depth Perception.
- Avoidance of Visual Activities: Due to vision difficulties, children with amblyopia avoid activities that require visual focus, such as reading and drawing.
- Headaches and Eye Strain.
Risk Factors
- Strabismus (Crossed Eyes/Squint): In this condition, the eyes are not properly aligned, and both eyes look in different directions. The brain ignores one eye to avoid double vision.
- Nearsightedness, Farsightedness, or Astigmatism.
- Premature Birth.
- Family History.
- Significant Difference in Refractive Error Between the Two Eyes.
- Cataract.
- Ptosis (Droopy Eyelid).
- Eye Trauma.
Diagnosis
Lazy eye is diagnosed through a specialized eye examination. At VISION Clinic, we have specialized equipment for examining babies and children.
Regular eye exams for children, especially in the early years, are important for detecting potential vision problems. Examinations usually begin as early as 6 months of age, and it is recommended that an eye specialist thoroughly examine the child’s vision between 3 and 4 years of age.
Our pediatric ophthalmologist uses a special pediatric refractometer (Plusoptix), which examines both eyes simultaneously from a distance of one meter in less than a second. The results are accurate, without the need for dilated pupils.
The Retinomax pediatric refractometer measures vision in babies and has built-in changing lights and music to hold the babies’ attention.
Treatment
Effective treatment for amblyopia depends on the underlying cause of the condition. The earlier the condition is detected, the more effective the treatment. It may include glasses to improve focus or eye exercises to correct improper vision habits. Sometimes, drops are prescribed that temporarily blur the vision of the healthy eye to stimulate and improve vision in the weaker eye.
A primary treatment method is patching the stronger eye with an occluder (a patch or textile material specifically designed to cover the eye directly or through glasses frames).
Prevention
Prevention largely depends on early diagnosis.
- Early treatment of strabismus (crossed eyes) can prevent the development of lazy eye.
- Correction of vision problems – nearsightedness or astigmatism.
Frequently Asked Questions
Amblyopia requires medical intervention and treatment prescribed by an eye specialist. There are exercises a child can do at home to stimulate the lazy eye, but they do not replace medical treatment.
When detected early and treated correctly, vision improves very well. The success of treatment depends on the severity of the problem and the patient’s age. If the condition is not treated, vision in the lazy eye decreases even further over time.
