Оrthokeratology lenses (Ortho-K)

VISION is the only clinic in Bulgaria that uses a revolutionary method to correct vision without surgical intervention. These are orthokeratology lenses (Ortho-K) — rigid contact lenses made to order for each individual patient. The lenses are tailored to the parameters of the cornea and the visual needs of the patient.

Orthokeratology lenses work by reshaping the cornea to correct vision defects during sleep, providing perfect vision throughout the day. The night lenses are worn only at night — the patient sleeps with them and removes them in the morning. During the day, there’s no need to wear glasses or contact lenses.

The reshaping process occurs gradually throughout the night. Ortho-K lenses apply gentle pressure to the cornea, which is part of the eye’s anatomical structure responsible for vision. It is recommended to sleep with the lenses for at least 6 hours.

Satisfactory results can be achieved in about 10 days for patients with myopia (nearsightedness) and 15 days for patients with hyperopia (farsightedness). Since this method is reversible, the night lenses must be worn every night to maintain consistent vision quality. If their use is stopped, the cornea will gradually return to its original shape, and the vision defects (diopters) will reappear within a few days.

Ortho-K lenses are suitable for patients with myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, and presbyopia, provided the cornea has a regular shape. In children and adolescents under 20, the lenses can be adjusted to slow the progression of myopia.

Ortho-K lenses are especially suitable for people who work under artificial lighting, spend excessive time in front of a computer, or simply prefer not to wear glasses. They are particularly effective for patients with dry eyes and for those working in dusty or polluted environments. Ortho-K lenses are a modern and proven method of vision correction for both children and active adults.

  6. Gently press the eyelids together, applying light pressure to release the lens.

  7. Clean the lens with a peroxide solution.

  8. Place the lens in its case and fill it with peroxide solution.

Lens Care

  • To avoid contamination, always wash your hands thoroughly before inserting or removing the lenses.

  • After removal, the lenses should be soaked in a peroxide solution for at least 6 hours. Proper cleaning and disinfection are essential for eliminating bacteria and ensuring safe lens wear.

  • Once a week, it is recommended to remove protein deposits from the lenses using enzymatic cleaning tablets.

Dos and Don’ts

  • Do insert your night lenses right before going to sleep.
Avoid wearing them while reading, watching TV, using screens, or doing other activities while awake.

  • Do not wear your lenses during the day.

  • Do carry your lens case/container with you.
You might need to insert the lenses in an emergency situation, such as driving at night.

  • Do replace your lenses once a year to avoid changes in their quality or material.

  • If your child wears lenses, ensure they follow strict hygiene and that lens use is closely monitored.

  • If your child is going on a school trip or vacation and you’re unsure if hygiene can be maintained, it is advisable to consult with your eye care professional and consider stopping lens use during that time.

  • It is very important to attend all scheduled follow-up eye exams.

  • The lens case must be impeccably clean.
Do not clean it with tap or mineral water.
